Interactive Mathematics

produced by  The National Library of Virtual Manipulatives  Utah State University

These tightly focused, highly interactive computer-based "mathlets" are designed to help students learn particular mathematical concepts. Just as physical manipulatives can be powerful teaching tools for an experienced teacher, these virtual manipulatives stimulate the same kind of student engagement with concepts as physical manipulatives can, but in more ways as well.
Organized according to the grade-levels and content standards of the Principles and Standards of School Mathematics (NCTM "Standards 2000"), most applets involve a significant degree of open-endedness.

Students are supported in lateral thinking, thinking "outside the box."

Because these mathlets deal with mathematical concepts and not with any particular curriculum, they can be used by any teacher, at any grade-level, to support the particular needs of a class or individual student. They can fit into many lesson plans or curricular schemes, limited only by the imagination of the teacher or the curiosity of the student, and they afford great versatility:

·         Use with a projector for class discussion and joint exploration.

·         Assign students singly or in pairs on a computer at the back of the room.

·         Work in a computer lab.

·         Have students link from home to school web site.

All activities are available on both Home and School versions
